Matthiasson - Cult Napa Wines

from 108.00

One of our favorite domestic producers is Matthiasson from Napa Valley, CA. In 2003, Steve Matthiasson, a leading viticultural consultant, moved to Napa Valley, and with his wife Jill, launched the Matthiasson brand. He is the winemaker and she manages the wine business and fruit orchards. In addition to his work with famed Napa Valley clients Araujo Estate, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, and Hall and Spottswoode, Steve Matthiasson has made distinctive, balanced, lower alcohol wines using less traditional grape varieties and blends.

And the critics have noticed - Matthiasson was named Winemaker of the Year by Food and Wine in 2012, Winemaker of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle in 2014, and Outstanding Wine Professional Semifinalist by the James Beard Foundation in 2014, 2015, and 2018.

We are pleased to offer special pricing on the following Matthiasson wines (plus a 10% discount on 12-bottle orders)!

Napa Valley White 2015 - $40
This wine is Matthiasson's conception of a mythical “ideal” white wine. The 2015 blend is roughly 50 percent Sauvignon blanc, 25 percent Ribolla gialla, 20 percent Semillon, and 5 percent Tocai friulano. The acidity and fruit expression is balanced by a rich lees character and a faint backdrop of creamy oak. There is interplay in the wine between lightness and richness, and focus and complexity. Flavors include the trademark white peach, kafir lime, lychee nut, beeswax, ripe fig, and pineapple, with prominent wet stones, oyster shells, and freshly baled straw.

Linda Vista Chardonnay 2017 - $50
This wine is 100% Chardonnay from the Linda Vista Vineyard. With Golden Delicious apples, yellow peaches, musk melon, and honey on the nose and through to the palate, the medium acidity is balanced by pleasant fleshiness, finishing very clean with a hint of minerality. Refreshing and with moderate alcohol, this wine is all about pleasure, begging to be drunk up, with some oysters or a roast chicken and a big smile.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 - $52
2015 was a warm year, the warmest since 1997, and it is a lush and dense wine. The nose shows abundant red fruits, lots of bright cherry along with bramble-berries, such as blackberry, cranberry, mulberry, and framed with hints of mineral/herbal characters such as graphite, cedar, and pencil shavings. The palate is vibrant and fresh, with light tannin and beautiful acidity.

Tendu White 2016 and Tendu Red 2017 (1L) - $18

In 2012, Steve and Jill Matthiasson embarked on a new project to produce handcrafted, affordable natural wines under the Tendu label. The White is Vermentino and the Red is a Barbera blend. Tendu is French for taut or tense, and the Tendu wines exemplify this with their body, strength, and zest. Refreshingly delicious and affordable. Very 'glou-glou' and perfect for summer!
